If programs in the “outdoor classroom” at Carpenter Nature Center are not an option for your group, naturalists are available to conduct programs at your location on a large variety of topics. Many of the most popular outreaches feature live program animals.
Outreach Program Topics
These hands-on programs are designed for a small group (max. 35 students). Programs are 45 minutes to 1 hour in length and most include live animals.
Animal Story Time – Listen to a nature story and meet one or two featured animals. Call for available topics. Grades Pre K – 1
Raptor and Pellet Investigation – Meet a live raptor and discover what they eat through hands-on pellet investigation. Grades K – 6.
Move like the Animals - Can you hop like a rabbit or slither like a snake? Watch live animals to learn how they move to escape predators or catch their prey. Grades Pre K – 4.
Beastly Bodies – Touch a reptile, amphibian, and mammal to learn about different body coverings. Discover how how their body covering helps protect them from danger and what special features enable them to live in their environment. Grades K – 4.
Reptile or Amphibian? - Get a close look at live herptiles and find out what reptiles and amphibians have in common and how they are different. Grades 2 – 6.
Survival Tactics – Through live animals and artifacts, discover some of the special adaptations animals have to help them survive in their environment. Grades 3 – 6.
For large groups (more than 35 students), Carpenter Nature Center offers live animal presentations presented “auditorium or assembly style.” Accommodations such as a microphone may be needed.
Raptors - Observe a live raptor to learn about the similarities and differences of various native raptors as well as the special adaptations of birds of prey.
Live Animal Exhibit – Carpenter Nature Center will set up an exhibit, provide a Naturalist for questions, and bring live animals to your event (e.g. science fair, company picnic).
